Review: Roseroseshop (December 2014)
Tuesday, January 13, 2015
Hello again! It's been a short while since I posted, mostly because I've been going out too much or just being lazy. Anyway, today I have a review for an Asian beauty store called Roseroseshop. I have done a mini review on this store before in my 'Recommended Online Asian Beauty Stores' post, but I thought it might be helpful to expand my thoughts since I had an order coming from them anyway. This is pretty long since there are a lot of products, so proceed with caution!
Disclaimer: All items were purchased by myself and I am not affiliated with the store. All my opinions are 100% honest regardless.
Similar to Beautynetkorea, which I reviewed a few weeks ago, Roseroseshop (which is going to be referred to as RRS from now on) is an online store that stocks Asian beauty items, though RRS has mostly Korean products. They have quite a lot of cult favourite Korean brands such as Etude House, Tonymoly, Laneige, 3CE and a lot of others. One of the reasons why people like buying from RRS is that they offer a lot of different samples of products, which means you can try out products before committing to a full size. Their prices are pretty cheap but note that only some items have free shipping and the majority of their items have shipping by weight, which can add up.
This is only my second time ordering from RRS, but I wanted to do a bigger order since I needed to restock on some items and basically just build up my collection of skincare. I placed this order on the 15th of December and according to my order page, it was shipped about a week later on the 22nd. I had chosen EMS shipping since it was only about $10 more than standard shipping, so it arrived on the 30th. This was my slowest ever arrival time for an EMS package, probably because it spent 2 whole days sitting in Incheon airport. I almost wish that I hadn't paid extra for EMS now since regular shipping from Korea would've taken 2 weeks max.
Anyway, here's what the package looked like when it arrived. I noticed that it came in an Etude House box too! It was a pretty big box and it was packed full. I was really surprised, but I found out why later...
Here are the things I actually bought, in the original packaging (minus one thing, because it would've taken up the whole photo). The total of my order was $120.46 USD ($155 NZD) and around $47 USD ($60 NZD) was shipping. One thing I don't really like is how they charge using USD instead of KRW which I assumed they would charge with. Since it was charged through USD, my order ended up being about $12 NZD more than it would've been. I know it's a small amount but hey, that could've covered my extra EMS shipping charge.
This was the first thing that I really wanted to try, the Nature Republic 92% Aloe Vera Soothing Gel. I've heard things about this gel for ages so I thought I'd try it since it is pretty cheap. On RRS this is currently $2.96 USD ($4 NZD), so it's definitely affordable. This comes in a 300mL tub (about the size of a Body Shop body butter tub) and has a cover over it.
There are apparently a million different uses for this aloe vera gel, but I usually use it as a moisturiser. My sister also got a bit sunburnt from our trip to the hot pools a couple weeks ago and she said it worked really well to relieve her sunburn. Also, a bit TMI here, but I had an inflammed abcess on my leg and after I used this gel on it for a few days, it was gone. The one thing I don't like is that it seems to take a long time to be absorbed. It seems to take 20 minutes+ to absorb into my legs which is a bit annoying since it's also sticky. Overall, it's a decent product so I'll keep it around for one of the many uses.
I've been on a bit of a rampage with masks lately so I picked up this 10 pack of Fresh Milk Mask Sheets from 3W Clinic, which was $1.87 USD ($2.40 NZD). It's pretty cheap for 10 masks but I think they were on 80% sale.
I really liked the scent from these masks (mm, milk) but the shape of them was so strange. My face shape is kind of oval, leading towards round. My face is not overly long at all. But when I put on one of these masks and positioned it properly, it didn't reach to the end of the chin or forehead and there was easily at least 5cm overhang on each side of my face. Such a strange mask shape, and it was kind of uncomfortable since it was so ill-fitting. I wouldn't really recommend these even for the low price.
Yes, I jumped on the snail hype train. This is the 3W Clinic Snail Mucus Sleeping Pack which was going for $3.35 USD ($4.30 NZD). The pamphlet on the inside told me that they were a sponsor of Miss Korea, which is pretty interesting. The listing claims that this repairs dry, damaged skin and makes skin brighter and less saggy.
I usually use the Laneige Water Sleeping Pack EX but I recently ran out so I thought I could try some alternatives. Unfortunately, I didn't really notice many results with this sleeping pack even after using it for about 2 weeks. Maybe I'll try it a bit longer and see if anything happens.
I was pretty excited to try this! It's the Secret Key Snow White Cream and you get this 50g jar (+ a spatula) for $5.77 USD ($7.40 NZD). First off, the packaging is really pretty! You're supposed to be able to use it as a primer, make-up base, whitening cream or a moisturising cream. This cream also contains niacinamide, which helps to reduce sebum, prevent sun damage, and reduce the size of pores.
I usually use it as a cream during my daytime skincare routine. It does brighten my skin a little, though definitely not as much as the photos in the product description would have you believe. It mostly just evens out my skin tone and reduces redness. It does make my pores appear a bit smaller though but I didn't really notice much moisturising going on. Another thing is that a little definitely goes a long way. This is a heavier cream and I've used it about five times since I got it, and even now I'm still using the excess product that ended up on the cover, haha. Overall, it's a pretty good product.
This is what I was most excited to try since it's gotten so much hype. It's another item from the Secret Key Snow White range, the Milky Pack. I got these for $7.46 USD ($9.60 NZD) each and each bottle has 200g of product. Going by what I've heard about the Milky Pack, you apply it like a pack and it lightens your skin for up to 10 hours. The brightening effect is almost freaky in some before and after photos that I've seen.
I wanted to try this because my skin has darkened a lot over the summer and in my opinion, my BB creams and other face products look mistmatched. But mostly, I just wanted to see if it would actually work as well as it seems to. I think it does work, but you need to use an awful amount of product to actually get a noticeable colour change. Also remember it is a pack, not a cream, so you need to wash it off after you apply it.
Yes, I needed more packs. This is the Too Cool for School McGirly Smoothie Pack, which comes in this wee 25g tub for $1.57 USD ($2 NZD). This is the cranberry and brown rice flavour, which is supposed to help with firming.
One thing I don't like is the packaging. This tub is not resealable, and there is definitely too much product to use all at once. I ended up putting the rest into a cosmetic pot. A little really goes a long way, I ended up being up to use it about four times despite packing on as much as I could. I didn't notice a paticular difference in my skin, but it did make my skin smell nice.
This is a pretty popular product too. I was going to repurchase the original black sugar mask but I saw 'strawberry' and had to get it, haha. The Skinfood Black Sugar Strawberry Wash-Off Mask... it's basically just a wash-off mask, it doesn't make too many claims except that it leaves your skin 'fresh, clean and with a fragrant strawberry scent'. This little tub was $6.05 USD ($7.75 NZD).
And that's essentially what it does. It does smell like strawberries, and a little bit like Chinese cough syrup? It's not a bad smell though. There are quite large seeds in it, so beware if you have sensitive skin. The application of the product itself was fine, but removing it was a bit annoying since I always found seeds stuck in my face cloth. I did like the scent, but I found that the product didn't do that much else. I'm definitely going to use it up but I probably won't repurchase.
Ugh, I need to stop hoarding cheap cleansers. The Tonymoly Clean Dew Foam Cleanser was only $1.92 USD ($2.50 NZD) for 180mL of product. I got the red grapefruit flavour, which is supposed to make the skin refreshed and elastic-y.
I used this for a few days as a normal foam cleanser during my skincare routine. And... I really didn't like it. It kind of stung my skin and actually made it feel really tight. I'm pretty sure the pH level of this was not suitable for my skin, though I've run of pH strips so I haven't tested it properly yet. I probably won't use this again but thankfully it was cheap so I'm not losing out on much.
I don't really know why I bought a BB cream but I bought this anyway. This is the Holika Holika Petit BB Cream which was $3.70 USD ($4.80 NZD). I love Holika Holika and their Baby Bloom BB Cream was actually one of my favourites, so I guess that's how I justified this purchase. This is the Moisture variety.
Honestly, I hated this BB cream. The fragrance was so overpowering. I actually felt suffocated in my room when I had this on because the scent is that strong, and I'm usually not too opposed to fragrance in my cosmetics. None of the reviews that I read mentioned this so I'm guessing it was a reformulation since the packaging looks different from the listing as well. It worked well enough as a BB cream but I won't be applying this again.
And now for the cutest item in this haul, the Tonymoly Pocket Bunny Mist which of course comes in this adorable bunny packaging. This is actually the repackaged version of the Bunny Mist, you may be familiar with their old packaging, though personally I like this newer one more. I got 60mL of this mist for $4.98 USD ($6.40 NZD), but it's gone back up to $6 now.
This comes in two different versions, sleek and moist, but this is the sleek version. It's not a perfume product, you're just supposed to spray it on your face to moisten up. I know some people that like to spray it throughout the day to cool off, but I just spray it before I put on my makeup. Honestly, I haven't noticed that it does anything for my skin but hey, it's cute.
Next, I got a five pack of these Etude House Black Charcoal Chin Packs. They're basically just blackhead strips that are shaped specially to fit on the chin. My chin is a bit of a problem area for me in terms of blackheads. I either have none of I have them everywhere, ugh. This pack of five was $1.97 USD ($2.50 NZD) so I thought they would be worth it to try.
Firstly, the strip isn't really shaped that nicely for the chin. It definitely didn't fit my chin at least, but then again my face isn't quite as small as the doll pictured on the packaging! Also, I really didn't like the smell. Usually I don't mind bad fragrances too much but you're supposed to leave this on for about 10 to 15 minutes. The smell gets a bit overwhelming and it's unpleasant.
I haven't mentioned this much, but the Etude House Real Art Cleansing Oil Moisture is my holy grail oil cleanser. It's a great oil cleanser that gets everything off and it's super affordable. I have a few friends that I want to introduce to Asian skincare products more so I bought one of these Etude House Real Art Remover Kits for one of them. For $1.78 USD ($2.30 NZD) I got these mini bottles of the Real Art Oil Cleanser and Lip & Eye Remover.

Do any of you remember that phase about 2 years ago when everyone was obsessing over lash serums and those two-step mascaras? Yeah, I'm a little late. This is the Etude House My Lash Serum which goes for $3.54 USD ($4.60 NZD). It claims to help lengthen the eyelashes and prevent lashes from falling out. Since this is a serum, it's pretty wet so it's suggested that you apply this right before you go to sleep,
Like a lot of others, I suffer from the short, very straight Asian lashes. I've tried this basically everyday since I got this package, and I have noticed a bit of a different. I haven't really seen much lengthening of my lashes, though I guess I would have to take some photos to see a better comparision. But, my lashes have stopped falling out as much. Since I started using this about 3 weeks ago, I haven't noticed a single lash fall out. So it must be doing something, right?
I haven't really had a need for concealer before, but this year I started noticing more dark circles under my eyes (due to lack of sleep... orz), so I decided it was about time to stop looking like I was dead. The Aritaum Full Cover Stick Concealer comes with a brush on one end and the concealer stick on the other end. It was $4.71 USD ($6.10 NZD) and I got it in the shade Natural Beige.
This actually was pretty full coverage, even when spread out a bit with the brush. The staying power was good and it didn't feel too dry. Really, my only complaint is the lack of colour options in the range. There were only two options: Light Beige and Natural Beige. The Natural Beige colour that I got was almost too light for me in the summer too.
Ah, I really didn't need another mascara. I have so many that I don't use already... But at only $2.04 USD ($2.65 NZD), I decided to try the Tonymoly Circle Lens Mascara in Volume since it was pretty inexpensive. It claims to give you 'an effect like wearing circle lens' and this option focuses on volume, of course.
It really wasn't an amazing mascara but for roughly $2, what can I expect? The volumising effect was okay, but it was really clumpy. I managed to do one eye okay but I started on the other eye and suddenly my first few lashes were clashed together in a giant black clump.
My mum's constantly stealing my eyeliner pencils, so she asked me to get one just for her. She picked out this Missha The Style Eyeliner Pencil which was $1.36 USD ($1.80 NZD). It's just a typical eyeliner pencil, and I got it in the colour black. I didn't try it myself but my mum tried it and she actually said it was too black for her, so there you go.

Both of my Dolly Wink Liquid Eyeliners ran out last month, ugh. And my friend who was going to bring me back some from Japan isn't coming back until the end of this month. I literally cannot survive more than 2 days without eyeliner, so I decided to pick up the Nature Republic By Flower Brush Eyeliner. It was really cheap, only $3.02 USD ($3.90 NZD) so I thought it would hold me over until I can use my Dolly Wink eyeliners again. And hey, if they worked out then I would have a good, cheap alternative.
First off, the colour is great. It's super black when applied and stays black. The application is good and the brush is easy to control as well. Usually the staying power is good too. But... it is so completely not waterproof. You know when you yawn and sometimes you tear up a little? That happened to me while I was wearing this and when I looked in the mirror and the eyeliner on the right eye was dripping halfway down my face. This would've been an amazing eyeliner if it could withstand water better but unfortunately, it didn't work out for me.
Yay for more things I haven't tried before! I used to only really use eyeliner, so I didn't have much of a need for an eye primer. I started using more eyeshadow in my makeup looks recently so I picked up this Nature Republic Botanical Eye Primer, which goes for $3.78 USD ($4.90 NZD). It claims to boost the colours of eyeshadows and eyeliners and improve the lasting power of makeup.
I didn't notice that much of a difference when using this to be honest. My eyeshadows looked exactly the same, and I didn't notice much of an improvement in lasting power. The positives are that it blends pretty easily and it's not particularly heavy, I can barely feel it on my skin.
I picked up these two brushes since I really didn't have any brushes before except a couple E.L.F and other free ones I got with a purchase. The Skinfood Medium Eyeshadow Brush was $2.41 USD ($3.10 NZD) and the Missha Pack Brush was $1.02 USD ($1.30 NZD).
I just use the Missha brush to apply my mask packs, such as the Too School for School Mask Pack from before. It works pretty well and it stops me from getting bits of mask underneath my nails. The Skinfood brush is okay as an eyeshadow brush. It definitely helps me get my shadows on but it's not amazing in function or anything,
Erm yeah, this is what was taking up so much space in the box. These are the Tonymoly Pure Cotton Sheet. There are a lot of them. Also, I can't read. The listing said 'x10 ea' but I totally blanked on that. So I received 10 boxes of these, and each box has 80 cotton sheets. So I got 800 cotton sheet/pads for $0.59 USD ($0.75 NZD). I just use these with my oil cleansers and they work pretty well to remove makeup. I've only used about a quarter of one box so far... so I have a long way to go.
And that is everything! Sorry for the super long review, there were so many things to get through.
Here are the samples I received. When I ordered they were running a promotion where you get a certain amount of samples depending on how much you spend, and I think it's still running. My order fell within the $101 to $200 range so I received all these. I was most excited to try the COSRX item since I've heard some good things.
And now for a short review on the Roseroseshop website itself!
Pros:
- Low pricesThe prices on RRS are really cheap, which is no surprise considering 90% of their stock is on sale at any given time. However, they don't include the shipping price so be aware.
- Clean interfaceThe website is really simple and easy to use. It's easy to order.
- Fast communicationI've heard some complaints about the communication from RRS but I actually experienced the opposite. I messaged them inquiring about some of the items that I was thinking about buying and they actually responded really fast. Their English is quite good too and there was no language barrier with the rep I was speaking to.
- Good samplesI've heard stories about people not receiving samples from RRS if they didn't specifically leave a note on their purchase which, of course, I didn't remember until my order was already shipped. Thankfully they did include samples in my order, and pretty decent ones too.
Cons:
- Shipping by weightThe shipping is calculated by weight, so sometimes things can end up being really expensive if you don't play around with the products and shop around.
- Iffy website searchI don't know if it's just me, but the website search bar didn't seem to work. A lot of things that I searched didn't show up when I knew that they had the item, or a lot of other unrelated items came up too.
- Slow turn-around-timeIt took about a week for my order to ship out. I understand that I had a lot of items but it's kind of slow, considering my previous order and my order from BNK didn't take nearly as long.
Overall, I was pretty happy with this experience. I would probably order from Roseroseshop again, but they're no longer my favourites as mentioned in my previous list. I'm going to stick to Testerkorea from now on, unless I want some items that count for free shipping on RRS.

I love Korean cosmetics too! I didn't know there was a strawberry version of the black sugar mask, I'll have to give it a try.
ReplyDeletehello! I know its been awhile since you've made this purchase but may I ask hows the 3W Clinic snail sleeping pack for you? I am asking you this because I have gotten the same product recently and I haven't operate on how I feel about it. I barely found a review of the product too on the internet :/
ReplyDeleteHey Finn,
DeleteSuper sorry for the late reply! I haven't checked this post in a while. Honestly, I found the product quite meh. It was a very goopy product and I didn't see much effects - it just made me feel a bit slimy which is not what my other snail products or sleeping packs do. I would get it a miss ^^
